Miriam MacCarthy had the privilege of going to the Tech in Ghana gathering!
She attended inspiring talks and debates about technology in Ghana. It was an invaluable experience, and she took away two main lessons:
Sandboxes provide an invaluable chance for Ghana's growing Fintech sector. Start-ups can take advantage of the platform to demonstrate their offerings and ascertain whether they meet customer needs. Additionally, founders can analyse up-to-date information on their target audience, user experience, and the market, giving them the possibility of refining and perfecting their tools or services.
A major, and legitimate, worry is claiming ownership. If we intend to keep furnishing organizations with African indigenous languages to diversify the data set, we need to make sure that we will hold ownership and be given credit for our contribution.
As machine learning and natural language processing become more available, African companies can take advantage of them to improve their business operations, quickly create products, and innovate at both a local and global level.
Affinity Africa highlighted the importance of data in developing products that appeal to women. By utilizing data to create customer segments and analyse the use of a fintech tool, product managers and product marketers are equipped to personalise features to optimise the user experience.
Blue Penguin talked about their effort to design a POS system that especially caters to market women. The primary issue was having to manipulate data to alter traditional conduct (e.g. paying with cash is more economical compared to using a POS) and also publicize the product in accordance with the way market women handle their businesses and engage with their customers.
Here at Hiedberg, data is of paramount importance and we believe it can profoundly influence the relationship customers maintain with the brands they choose.
Ghana's fintech scene is bustling with activity, development, and growth, yet hampered by governmental regulation and bureaucratic processes. Tap Tap Send highlighted the need to strengthen the relationship between the government and start-up sector. This partnership would give entrepreneurs the opportunity to trial their ideas and increase the speed of their business expansion. In an effort to join a growing amount of African nations that have Startup Acts, South Africa and Senegal have already taken steps to approve their own. Ghana is now in the process of creating its very own Startup Bill.
Altogether, this conference highlighted the tremendous development and potential of Ghana's tech sector!
